Meeting scheduled Monday to fill Delaware vacancy
The Common Council has scheduled a special meeting Monday, when lawmakers are expected to vote on filling the vacant Delaware District seat.
Lawmakers have been struggling to end a deadlock over who should succeed Marc A. Coppola after his election to the State Senate. Coppola and Democratic leaders in the Delaware District favor Michael J. LoCurto for the Council seat. LoCurto is an aide to Assemblyman Sam Hoyt, D-Buffalo.
Four of the eight Council members have publicly endorsed LoCurto. But Majority Leader Dominic J. Bonifacio said Wednesday he is cautiously optimistic LoCurto will receive at least five votes at the special meeting scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Three others are seeking the post: Rosemarie LoTempio, whose grandmother previously served as Council majority leader; Samuel R. Marie, a former Buffalo police officer; and Pedro Velez Lopez, who has been active in local Hispanic groups.
