County to hire firm to design headquarters

The Genesee County Legislature Wednesday took the first step to building a new headquarters for the Sheriff's Department.

The legislators agreed to hire SWBR Architects and Engineers of Rochester for design and structural services for the $4.7 million, single-story structure to be built on Park Road at the city's northwestern border.

The $398,000 contract continues a provision for a subcontract to Erdman Anthony Consulting Engineers, largely for plumbing and electrical work. The state Wicks Law requires separate bids.

The county expects to seek bids for the construction this spring.

The building will house new communications equipment to be purchased with a $2.3 million state grant. The 18,000-square-foot project will have enough space for Batavia and Le Roy police to join in a countywide E-911 operation.

In other business, legislators:

*Awarded a $782,280 contract to Baseline King Corp. of Oneida for new lighting at the county airport.

*Agreed to spend $18,200 to install emergency return systems in elevators in three county buildings. Thyssenkrupp Elevator of Buffalo will do the work.
