SPEAKER: Award-winning actor and writer Ben Stein will speak at Canisius College at 7:30 p.m. today in the Montante Cultural Center on "Honoring America's Soldiers." A writer for "E! Online" and the American Spectator, Stein has worked as a lawyer, teacher, and speech writer for former presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald Ford.

DIVERSITY WEEKEND: Kevin Locke, Native American flute player and hoop dancer, will bring Lakota traditions to Cultural Diversity Weekend at Jamestown Community College's Olean campus. Locke will perform a concert at 7 p.m. Friday in Cutco Theater and lead a workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Library and Liberal Arts Center. Call 376-7586.

RED CROSS RECEPTION: The American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter, and Western New York Grantmakers Association will co-host a wine-and-cheese reception marking the 10th anniversary of grant workshops at 5 p.m. Friday in Red Cross headquarters, 786 Delaware Ave. Call 845-0734.

SPEAKER: Ralph Nader, Green Party presidential candidate and advocate for the environment, consumers and pro-democracy issues, will speak at 6 p.m. Friday in Harder Hall at Alfred University. His talk will focus on consumerism and the importance of being an activist. A reception and book signing at Powell Campus Center will follow.
