Ann Quarles, a Buffalo resident and school crossing guard, died Saturday in Millard Fillmore Hospital after a brief illness. She was 84.
Born Ann Gary in Alabama City, Ala., she came to Buffalo in 1946. She worked the past 44 years as a crossing guard for Buffalo Public Schools.
Mrs. Quarles was member of Calvary Baptist Church and active in the church's Nurses Guild and Usher Board. She also was a member of the YMCA and the Buffalo Branch of the NAACP.
She is survived by her husband, William; two daughters, Beverly E. Carpenter and Deborah A. Brown, both of Buffalo; a son, William A. Preston of Buffalo; four sisters, Christine Streeter of Gadsden, Ala., Evelyn Johnson of Cleveland, Barbara Smallwood of Kansas City, Mo., and Kay Chancellor of Akron, Ohio; four brothers, Walter Gary of Buffalo, Harold Gary of Hobson City, Ala., William Gary of Montgomery, Ala., and Arnold Gary of Detroit; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Friday in Calvary Baptist Church, 1184 Genesee St., after a wake at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
