Rita M. Werner, retired Buffalo art teacher <br> July 21, 1914 -- March 17, 2006

A memorial Mass for Rita M. Werner, a retired Buffalo Public Schools teacher and volunteer, will be offered at 10:45 a.m. Thursday in St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 1085 Englewood Ave., Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.

Mrs. Werner died Friday in Gaymont Nursing Center, Norwalk, Ohio. She was 91.

Born Rita Funk in Buffalo, she graduated from East High School and the University of Buffalo. She taught art at School 77 and several other city schools for 35 years and was a member of the Buffalo Retired Teachers Association and the New York State Retired Teachers Association.

She had been a volunteer for the American Red Cross and a docent at the Buffalo Zoo. She was a world traveler and enjoyed reading.

In 2000, Mrs. Werner moved to Norwalk, where she attended St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a 50-year member of St. John the Baptist Church.

Surviving are two sons, Frederick N. Barry of Norwalk and Thomas J. Barry of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
