Dancing to 'No Mo' Napkins'

Musicians are as ubiquitous in high schools as gum on the underside of a desk. It's no different at Nichols, where Sean Heidinger and Rick Pierce are two.

There's more to these high school juniors than just lanky good looks, sideswept hair, the phrase, "Oh, snap", and the ability to wear girls' Seven jeans and pull off carrying around a Disney Princess backpack to great effect. Sean and Rick (aka Seabass and Frito Lay) are the frontmen and vocalists of No Mo' Napkins. Of his self-proclaimed "hybrid indiehip-hop" band, Sean says: "We want to make you dance; that's basically our goal."

Rick produces all the beats, does the "technical stuff", the designing, and most of the promotion, while Sean writes the lyrics, which include (from the single "Boot You In Da' Face") "I'm gonna boot you in daface/I'm gonna bonk you with some cheetos." Their collaboration is the result of influences like Gym Class Heroes and a bit of Luda. Rick describes his bandmate Sean as "a lyrical genius, a lyricologist, that can keep it real." When asked to describe his friend and bandmate, Sean simply says, "Rick is tall." Sean and Rick are the vocalists and frontmen, but of course they rely on their band: Nichols seniors John Hadala on guitar and Don Arthur on bass, with Phil Wagner on drums, and DJ Maxwell Collins. The band began as a hobby, but the musicians' enthusiasm is palpable. They've decided to pursue this cross-pollination of hip-hop, rock, and dance music, with mounting success. In the year the band has been together, Napkins has done two shows, one a charity event at Nichols last April, and a show at the Icon as part of the East Coast leg of atour they were part of this summer, playing with local band Cute Is What We Aim For, and Dave Melillo.

They've recorded tracks for signed bands like Cute and West Coast-based band My American Heart. Their next show is still TBA, but they report they've had label interest and an "EP" coming soon.
