>Familiar rivals again vie for top courtroom honor
For the third consecutive year, students from the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart and Williamsville North High School will face off Wednesday for the championship of the mock trial tournament sponsored by the Bar Association of Erie County.
Mock trial tournaments give students the opportunity to learn by performing in lifelike courtroom dramas. This year's hypothetical case falls under criminal law and involves the prosecution of a high school student who caused the death of a passenger by driving a vehicle in an allegedly reckless manner.
Sacred Heart is defending champion in the tournament, which begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the ceremonial courtroom, Part 6 at State Supreme Court, 92 Franklin St. State Supreme Court Justice Gerald J. Whalen will preside.
The winning team advances to April's regional tournament, also sponsored by the Bar Association of Erie County. Students will be recognized at the association's annual Law Day Luncheon on April 25.
