Joyce O. Bland of Buffalo, who worked as a counselor, died Sunday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. She was 64.
Ms. Bland, born in Buffalo, earned her general education diploma before earning two associate's degrees from Erie Community College.
She worked in several jobs over the years. She was employed as a barber, school bus driver, assembly line worker for Fisher-Price and most recently was a counselor with Harbor House, an overnight drop-in shelter.
She was an active member at Emmanuel Temple Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she was active in usher, deaconess and welcoming organizations. She also enjoyed acting and appeared in several church plays.
Ms. Bland is survived by four sisters, Mary Willis, Vivien Davis, Ernestine Hawkins and Norma, all of Buffalo, and three brothers, William of New York City, Phillip of Buffalo and Paul of San Francisco.
A memorial service is being planned.
