Jane Ellis Burrell, a career teacher who taught in one-room schools, died Sunday in Olean General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 91.
A lifelong resident of Ellicottville, she graduated from Ellicottville High School and Fredonia Normal School. She taught for 32 years in one-room rural schools and for Ellicottville Central School.
In 1937, she married Dean William Burrell, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Burrell was a communicant at St. John's Episcopal Church, where in 1974 she was the first woman elected to the vestry. She held that position until her death. She also was senior warden and secretary of St. John's Guild.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, New York State Retired Teachers Association and Ellicottville Historical Society.
Survivors include two sons, Dean William Jr. and John A., both of Ellicottville; two sisters, Anne E. Brooks and Esther Harrison, both of Ellicottville; and a grandson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. John's Church, Washington and Jefferson streets. Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.
