Tony Roma's restaurant has closed

Tony Roma's restaurant on Ridge Lea Road in Amherst has closed, about two years after opening.

The ribs, steak and seafood restaurant was run by a Niagara County-based franchisee, Executive Food Group. The franchisee last weekend closed the Amherst location and another Tony Roma's restaurant it had operated in Rochester, said Marc Buehler, vice president of marketing for Romacorp, the Dallas-based operator of the Tony Roma's chain. The Rochester location opened in late 2005.

Romacorp was surprised by the closings, Buehler said.

"Certainly we're disappointed and would like to re-enter the market with a new franchisee down the road," he said.

Buehler referred further questions about the closings to Ross Myles, chief executive officer of Executive. Myles did not return calls to comment.

The Amherst restaurant was in a new building across from Boulevard Consumer Square on Niagara Falls Boulevard.

The two restaurants were Tony Roma's only locations in New York state. The chain, which has a mix of company-owned and franchisee-owned restaurants, has 230 locations in the United States and other countries.

The closings have no effect on the Tony Roma's locations in Niagara Falls, Ont.

The Tony Roma's chain is unrelated to Tony Rome's, which has restaurants in West Seneca and East Aurora.
