Mildred George, nurse, ex-Army captain March 28, 1917 -- March 13, 2006

NIAGARA FALLS -- Mildred M. George of Niagara Falls, a retired nurse and former captain in the Army, died Monday in Mount St. Mary Hospital, Lewiston, after a fall in her home. She was 88.

The Strykersville native received a bachelor's degree from the University of Buffalo and did her registered nurse training at St. Mary's Hospital, where she worked in the surgery department from 1939 to 1942.

Miss George was an Army nurse serving stateside from 1945 to 1947 and earning the rank of captain.

She was employed as the chief nurse at Bell Aircraft in Wheatfield from 1942 until retiring in 1981.

Miss George often served as toastmistress at various functions. She was an avid traveler, including trips to Europe.

Survivors include two sisters, Colette Metz of Strykersville and Donna Caves of East Aurora, and a brother, Carl of Strykersville.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Mary Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church, Strykersville. Burial was in the church cemetery.
