Dunbar named to lead Charlotte Sidway School
A Grand Island High School graduate has been appointed principal of Charlotte Sidway Elementary School, filling a post left vacant more than a year ago when then-principal Frank Cannata was charged with drug possession.
Denise Dunbar, the principal of Pembroke Primary School for the past two years, was unanimously appointed by the Grand Island School Board this week.
The former Denise Bonsack graduated from Grand Island High School in 1975, and earned her bachelor's degree from Potsdam State College and her master's from Geneseo State College. She spent 18 years in Le Roy, where she taught kindergarten through second grade and served as assistant principal.
Grand Island Superintendent Thomas Ramming said Dunbar's strong background in early literacy and math was a good fit for Sidway, which houses pupils in kindergarten and first grade.
She will begin work at Sidway April 24, at a salary of $85,000.
The public is invited to meet Dunbar during a reception at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the dining room at Sidway.
