Best Bets

1. Get down in the valley at noon Saturday when "The Other Parade" hits the Old First Ward.

Follow the marching bands and family clans as they start from the Valley Community Center, located near the junction of South Park Avenue and Elk Street. Wave at the floats, clowns and classic cars! Stick around after the parade for the real bash at the community center, were "Blackhorn" will rock away the afternoon.

Then get up the next day and do it again on Delaware Avenue, where the parade will start at 2 p.m.

2. Forget the pub crawl. After Sunday's parade, breathe some fresh air at Rotary Rink!

This is the last opportunity to ice skate, and get this: Free skate rental!

That's right, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. skate rings around Rotary, and don't forget to check out the clowns and face painters.

Find the rink at Fountain Plaza. Find the plaza at the corner of Main and Chippewa streets.

3. How much does a lighthouse weigh?

Ask the costumed interpreters from New York State Parks when they present a glimpse of the Seaway Trail at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Gateway Executive Office auditorium, 3556 Lake Shore Road in Blasdell.

"Seaway Trails' Lighthouses and Shipwreck Stories of Lake Ontario" includes tales of three shipwrecks as well as 20 lighthouses that dot the 454-mile trail that parallels Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River.

Cost: $3. Presented by the Hamburg Natural History Society.

4. Remember "The Diving Fool" from David Letterman?

Catch him up close as the Shrine Circus stops at the Hamburg Fairgrounds' Agri-Center for 10 shows.
