William J. Cosgrove, a retired 40-year veteran and battalion chief of the Buffalo Fire Department, died Monday in Greenfield Health and Rehabilitation Center, Lancaster, after a brief illness. He was 102.
Born in Buffalo, he attended St. Joseph's High School.
He worked for the Buffalo Fire Department from 1928 until retiring in 1968.
Mr. Cosgrove was a member of Buffalo Fire Historical Museum and Nash Council, Knights of Columbus.
His wife, Nora McLaughlin Cosgrove, died in 1983.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Joanne Basil of Buffalo; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 65 Ridgewood Road, after prayers at 11 in Thomas H. McCarthy Funeral Home, 1975 Seneca St. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
