William J. Congdon, teacher, outdoorsman <br> June 25, 1940 -- March 13, 2006

A memorial service for William J. Congdon, an outdoorsman and former Lancaster High School teacher, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in The Chapel at Cross-Point, 500 CrossPoint Parkway, Getzville.

Mr. Congdon, who also coached the school's swim team before retiring in 1995, died Monday in his Lancaster home after a long illness. He was 65.

Born and educated in Buffalo, he was a graduate of Hutchinson-Central Technical High School and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Buffalo State College.

He taught chemistry and computer science at Lancaster High School for 43 years, and he was known for starting the first computer science course at the school.

Mr. Congdon started a computer store, Computer Discount Center, on Main Street in Clarence in 1995. He operated that business, selling software and providing computer repairs and programming, until 2003.

He was a longtime volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 555 in Lancaster and a member of the choir at The Chapel. He loved camping and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, the former Rita Bailie; a daughter, Amy of Lancaster; three sons, William R. of Freedom, Robert of Alden and David of Atlanta; his mother, Violet of Depew; a brother, Lester of Depew; and four grandchildren.

Burial will be in Lancaster Rural Cemetery.
