Sister Mary Casimir Gutowski, a Felician Sister for 62 years, died Saturday in Erie County Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was 81.
The former Theresa Gutowski entered the Buffalo Province of the Felician Sisters on July 6, 1943, and professed perpetual vows on Aug. 6, 1951. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Erie, Pa., and graduated from Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy in Buffalo. She earned a bachelor's degree in education from Mount St. Joseph Teachers College, Buffalo.
Sister Mary Casimir taught for 30 years at the primary and secondary level in various Catholic elementary schools, at Guardian Angel Day Care Center and at the Villa Maria Learning Center.
She conducted the Boys Choir at St. Stanislaus School in Buffalo and served as principal of St. Stephen's School on Grand Island. From 1973 to 1982, she was the administrator at Guardian Angel Day Care Center in Buffalo.
Since 1984, Sister Mary Casimir had helped process nonprint materials for the Blessed Mary Angela Library at Villa Maria Convent, first on a part-time basis, then as a consultant.
Her last involvement in education was at Villa Maria Academy, where she assisted in various capacities for 12 years. In July 2000, she became a patient in Villa Maria Infirmary.
Survivors include two sisters, Sister Mary Colomana Gutowski of Buffalo and Cecelia "Sally" Truchanowicz of Erie.
Her great-nephew, the Rev. Richard Toohey of Hermitage, Pa., will officiate at a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in Villa Maria Convent Chapel, 600 Doat St. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
