The Town of Hamburg has reached tentative agreements with its two villages to consolidate building inspection and code enforcement departments, Town Supervisor Steven J. Walters has announced.
The town has been handling the Village of Hamburg's inspections since July following the resignation of the code enforcement officer.
Mayor Curt S. Herrmann said some details remain to be worked out, including maintaining the building design standards recently enacted by the village.
Blasdell Village Administrator Janet Plarr said the status of its part-time code enforcement officer remains unresolved but there is an agreement in principal.
Walters said the agreement will allow for more efficient service at a lower cost.
The town will assume responsibility for building inspections and handle all permit applications. Violations will be prosecuted in town court.
The town does expect to hire an additional building inspector to handle the increased work load, but overall savings are expected, Walters said.
"Everyone recognized that this was a tremendous opportunity to increase the level of cooperation between the town and the villages while at the same time saving the taxpayers some money," he said.
The town legal department is taking the necessary steps to comply with local and state requirements and it is hoped the agreement will take effect June 1.
