Thomas nets three for Purple Eagles

Erralyn Thomas scored three goals and had an assist to help the Niagara women's lacrosse team capture its first victory of the season, 7-3, over Central Connecticut State at Canisius' Demske Complex.

Thomas scored twice in the final 6:43 to help the Purple Eagles (1-2) pull away after they rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit with a 3-0 run to open the second half. Katie Gates scored a pair for Niagara.

Canisius lost its home opener to Division II power Gannon, 10-7. The ninth-ranked Golden Knights ended the game with a 5-0 burst after falling behind, 7-5, with 3:18 left in the first half. Whitney Card had two goals and an assist for the Golden Griffins (1-1) and Erica Nasca (Hamburg) scored twice.


GOLF: St. Bonaventure overcame a six-stroke deficit to win the Fort Lauderdale Spring Invitational at Grande Oaks Country Club for its third title of the season. Bona fired a second-round 288 to finish the tourney at 588, five strokes ahead of fellow Atlantic 10 member and first-round leader Saint Joseph's. Ben Howe and Brennan Payne (Pioneer) tied for fourth overall with a four-over-par 146.


BASEBALL: John Zinnicker struck out seven and scattered six hits in 7 1/3 innings during St. Bonaventure's 6-1 win over Monmouth in Boca Raton, Fla. Randy Moley (Lancaster) and Josh Perkins (Niagara-Wheatfield) had three hits each as the Bonnies finished with 15. . . . Kevin Mahoney went 2 for 4 with two RBIs during Canisius' 10-7 loss at Appalachian State in Hickory, N.C. . . . Carl Aquila (St. Mary's of Lancaster) homered during University at Buffalo's 13-3 loss at Southern Mississippi.


SOFTBALL: Niagara opened the Mason Dixon Classic in Virginia Beach, Va., with a 7-6 win over host George Mason but fell, 4-0, to James Madison. In the opener, Heather Lohrman's bunt single in the bottom of the seventh drove in the winning run for NU (3-2), which rallied from deficits of 5-0 and 6-5. Katie Gleiser (Maryvale) earned the win in relief.

UB dropped decisions to Hofstra, 7-1, and North Carolina State, 5-2, in the Adidas Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. Sophie Barstad went 2 for 3 in the opener for UB (4-8). Lacy Schneider drove in the tying run with a single for UB in the top of the sixth, but NC State scored three times in its half of the inning to settle things. . . . Brianna Bricker allowed just one hit in St. Bonaventure's 1-0 loss to South Dakota State in Orlando, Fla. Bona also dropped a 4-3 decision to Robert Morris.


MEN'S HOCKEY: Niagara (19-14-1, 13-6-1 conference) will face Robert Morris (12-19-3, 7-11-2) at 3:35 p.m. today in the College Hockey America semifinals at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum in Detroit. Fourth-seeded Robert Morris rallied from a three-goal deficit to beat No. 5 Air Force, 4-3, Friday in the quarterfinals. NU earned a bye into the semifinals and the top seed by winning the regular-season title.


MEN'S DIVING: UB's Cassidy Lynch placed 10th in qualifying at the NCAA Zone A Championships in Annapolis, Md. Lynch amassed a 12-dive total of 575.15 points in the 3-meter qualifier in which the top four finishers advanced to the NCAA Championships.


WOMEN'S DIVING: Keri Vito of St. Bonaventure placed seventh out of 32 divers in qualifying in the 1-meter at the NCAA Zone A Championships with 452.40 points.
