Edna M. Hilger, who worked several decades in a family roofing business, died Tuesday in Lockport Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 93.
Born Edna Woodworth in Medina, Mrs. Hilger was married in Colorado, where her husband was training with the 10th Mountain Division, and returned to Lockport to begin raising their family.
Mrs. Hilger started her career working at Harrison Radiator. In 1946, her husband, Arthur H., and Frank McGonigle founded McGonigle & Hilger Roofing Co., for which she was bookkeeper and office manager. She worked in the family business for more than 40 years.
Mrs. Hilger was a member of HoliMont Ski Area in Ellicottville, and skied into her 80s. She loved to entertain and share a chalet in Ellicottville with friends and family.
Mrs. Hilger was a former president of Charlotte Cross PTA and was awarded a lifetime membership. She also was a Girl Scout leader, and a member of the Clara Foote Group, Grace Episcopal Church and Lockport Senior Centre Line Dancers.
She had played in a bridge group every Friday since 1948. She also loved dancing.
Mrs. Hilger and her husband took up golfing in 1986 and were members of the Lockport Town & Country Club.
Her husband died in 2003, a few months after their 60th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include two daughters, Sally Bisher of Waterport and Cheryl of Lockport; a son, Arthur E. of Lockport; a sister, Velma Davey of California; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Prudden and Kandt Funeral Home, 242 Genesee St., Lockport.
