Andrew J. Mathias Jr. of the Town of Tonawanda, a retired English teacher and athletic coach at Tonawanda High School, died Monday at home after a long illness. He was 59.
Born in Buffalo, he lived there and in North Tonawanda before moving to the Town of Tonawanda 14 years ago.
He was a graduate of the State University at Albany and had a master's degree from Canisius College.
He taught English at Tonawanda High School for 23 years, and coached wrestling, football and track. He retired in 1992 after an auto accident left him a quadriplegic.
Survivors include a sister, Marilee of the City of Tonawanda; two brothers, Terry of Carbondale, Ill., and Jamie of Citrus Heights, Calif.
A graveside service in Acacia Park Cemetery, Pendleton, will be held at a later date.
