David H. Goeckel of Amherst, a business executive and active youth sports coach, died unexpectedly Saturday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 56.
Mr. Goeckel was born in Buffalo but moved with his family to Central New York at a young age, later graduating from C.W. Baker High School in Baldwinsville. He returned to this area to earn a bachelor's degree at the University at Buffalo.
Mr. Goeckel worked as the national airport operations manager for Source Interlink Cos. He previously served as senior vice president of Empire State News, which was purchased by Source Interlink.
He served as a baseball coach in the Matthewson McCarthy Little League in Amherst and coached basketball in a town league.
Mr. Goeckel enjoyed biking, fishing, golfing and skiing.
Survivors include his wife of 33 years, the former Deborah L. Russ; two sons, Jeffrey of Jamestown and Douglas of Cheektowaga; his mother, Betty of Zellwood Station, Fla.; two sisters, Carleen of San Francisco and Sandra Dumanski of York, Pa.; and two brothers, Robert of Salt Lake City and Christopher of Lansing, Mich.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
