The ladies came out to show off their long hair last Saturday for the Good Hair Day contest in the Niagara County Historical Society.
Fourteen women showed up to compete in the hair-growing contest -- and one man, Alec Maslowski of Lockport, sat down to get his hair measured.
"Then he escaped," said Melissa Dunlap, historical society executive director.
Debbie Stella of Medina was one of two contestants to donate 12 inches of their hair to Locks of Love. The other donor was Nichaela Bald of Lockport.
Alexandra Tillman, 11, of Barker, won the under 12 years old category, with 28 inches of hair. Heather Hildebrandt of Lockport had 33 inches of hair to win in the youth category, and Lorraine Garver of Gasport was tops among adults, at 68.5 inches.
Marcia Zimmer portrayed Isabella Sutherland, one of seven sisters who inspired Good Hair Day. The sisters, raised in Cambria, became known for their long, long hair -- and their voices. They starred on Broadway and traveled with the circus in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Dunlap said Victoria Sutherland had the longest hair: 7 feet.
