Big half gives UB share of third place

The University at Buffalo women's basketball team scored 52 points in the second half -- the most for the Bulls in any half this season -- to whip host Ohio, 84-77, and move a step closer to hosting a first-round Mid-American Conference playoff game.

Brooke Meunier scored 17 of her game-high 23 points in the half while Heather Turner got 13 of her 20 and Stephanie Bennett netted 10 of her 13.

The win gave UB (9-16) and Ohio (7-18) identical 4-10 MAC records and put them in a tie for third place in the East. The third- and fourth-place teams host first-round games. UB closes the season at home against Akron (Saturday) and Kent State (Tuesday).

Elsewhere, four Daemen players scored in double figures as the Wildcats edged Roberts Wesleyan, 69-68, in the first round of the American Mideast Conference Tournament. Timyra Hudson (Sweet Home) had 17 points, Allison Depp (Lockport) had 16, Germany Jackson (Traditional) got 14 and Alison LaPoint scored 11. Daemen (20-11) hosts Walsh (16-12) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. . . . D'Youville got 11 points each from Rachel Placito, Christine Halter (16 rebounds) and Jonisha Scott (Traditional) to edge Keystone, 61-59, in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament. . . . Darnika Moseley scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, both game-highs, and Cat Ejimadu (Bennett) scored 15 points for Buffalo State (9-17) in a 71-59 loss at Oswego State (19-6) in the opening round of the SUNYAC playoffs. . . . Cheryl Kindzia (Williamsville North) scored 22 points and got 15 rebounds for Fredonia in a 63-51 playoff loss to Geneseo. . . . Hilbert was knocked out of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoffs by host Frostburg State (Md.), 90-61. The Hawks (6-19, 5-14) got 18 points from Lindsay Bergman (Holy Angels), 15 from Autumn Lee-Jeffries (Holy Angels) and 12 from Stephanie Lewandowski (Depew).


MEN'S BASKETBALL: Dallas Reinard scored 23 points for host Hilbert in a 77-63 victory over LaRoche in the first round of the AMCC playoffs. The Hawks (12-13, 10-9) advance to play regular-season champion Lake Erie College (19-6, 15-3) at Erie, Pa. on Friday at 6 p.m. . . . Dion Mozelle had 17 points and Dante Griggs added 15 but Buffalo State (13-13) ended the season with a 99-84 loss to Cortland in the SUNYAC playoffs. . . . Kyle Ward scored 20 points as D'Youville (4-22) lost to Keystone, 83-65, in the NEAC Tournament.
