Two dozen wannabes make the 'Idol' cut

Here they are, the final 24, with the next Idol ready to claw and scrat. . . er, sing his or her way to the top of the pile, and maybe even the recording charts.

*The good: Paris Bennett and Mandisa Hundley get in.

*The bad: Taylor Hicks: Love the hair, but the haircut gives me the blues. Nice harmonica entrance!

*The ugly: Brenna Gethers, denounced by Simon Cowell as a "nightmare, precocious, impossible to work with" diva, gets through.

*Bye-Bye Brittenums: Charges of fraud, identity theft and related things ended the highly entertaining Idol run of Terrell and Derrell Brittenum. Maybe Terrell's excuses will impress a different kind of judge.

*She shoots, she scores!: Former Niagara University women's basketball player Becky O'Donohue, who lives in Dobbs Ferry, made the final 24. She and her twin, Jessie, played for NU from 1998 through 2002.

*Coming up: Two two-hour competitions, with the men facing off from 8 to 10 p.m. Tuesday on Channel 29 and the women competing at the same time Wednesday. And you'll -- finally! -- be able to vote. Two men and two women will get the boot on a one-hour results show broadcast at 8 p.m. Feb. 23. This pattern will continue until March 14, when the top 12 contestants go head-to-head on Tuesdays, with half-hour live results shows every Wednesday.
