Madeline L. Grinage, singer, shop owner
May 11, 1916 -- Feb. 9, 2006

Madeline L. Grinage, an opera singer and the owner of Masten Floral Shop, died Thursday of heart failure in Buffalo General Hospital. She was 89.

Born Madeline L. Brown in Buffalo, she graduated from Fosdick-Masten Park High School.

As a young woman, she sang in Carnegie Hall in New York City and was a guest soloist with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.

For more than 30 years, she operated her flower shop on Jefferson Avenue.

Mrs. Grinage was a member of the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women's Club and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

At Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, Mrs. Grinage sang in the senior choir and mass choir and was active in the floral club.

Her husband, Theodore, died in 1983.

Survivors include two sisters, Gladys Brown and Arlene Shannon, both of Buffalo; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services will be at noon Friday in Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church, 790 Humboldt Parkway, after a wake at 11. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
