Reporters' Notebook / Bits and pieces of news ...

OLAF FUB SEZ: According to American playwright Arthur Miller (1915-2005), a former husband of Marilyn Monroe, "Maybe all one can do is hope to end up with the right regrets." . . .

In 1763, France ceded Canada to England under the Treaty of Paris, which ended the French and Indian War. . . . In 1962, the Soviet Union exchanged American U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers for Rudolph Ivanovich Abel, a Soviet spy held by the United States. . . . In 1967, the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, dealing with presidential disability and succession, went into effect. . . .

MAX MINGAL of Getzville might not have been around last Friday to celebrate his 100th birthday had he missed being on the famous list of Oskar Schindler. Mingal and his late wife, the former Ala Kuperberg, were saved by the industrialist who rescued the couple and hundreds of other Jews from Nazi death camps in Poland and put them to work in his bogus munitions factory in Brinnlitz, Czechoslovakia.

The Mingals survived the Nazis and the ravages of World War II and migrated to Buffalo. He worked at Bethleham Steel in Lackawanna for 25 years, retiring in 1973; she owned and operated Storz & Mingal Catering until retiring.

Mingal, a life master bridge player, was treated by friends and relatives last Saturday to a party at Weinberg Campus in Getzville, where he has lived for more than three years. He attributed his longevity to his "will to live" to enjoy his son, Victor, and daughter, Renee Bagel, both of Williamsville, and his grandchildren. And he didn't forget Schindler, who protected and saved him from the Nazi concentration camps.
