Dr. George B. Sidford of Hamburg, a retired dentist, died Thursday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 79.
He was a family practice dentist in the Village of Hamburg for 51 years, retiring in June 2003.
Dr. Sidford graduated from St. Joseph Collegiate Institute, Canisius College and the University at Buffalo School of Dentistry.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War, attaining the rank of captain. He was stationed at Johnson Air Force Base in Tokyo from 1953 to 1966.
He was a member of the New York State and Erie County Dental associations and the Eight County District Dental Society.
For many years, Dr. Sidford also was chairman of the Hamburg Beautification Committee. A gardener, he was a past president of the Men's Garden Club of Hamburg.
Survivors include his wife of more than 52 years, the former Margaret Callahan; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Laing of Eden; a sister, Evelyn K. Zangerle of Angola; and two grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in SS. Peter & Paul Church, 66 E. Main St., Hamburg. Entombment will be in the church cemetery.
