Samuel Del Monte of Buffalo, a retired restaurateur and construction worker, died Wednesday in Largo Healthcare Center, Seminole, Fla., after a short illness. He was 77.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Del Monte attended Orchard Park High School and played in the band.
He then served in the U.S. Navy.
He was involved in construction for many years and also owned and operated several restaurants and taverns in Buffalo and the Southtowns over the past 50 years.
He retired in the mid-1990s and wintered in Seminole.
Mr. Del Monte was a lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 17. He was also a member of various Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS posts in Western New York and Seminole, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, the former Eleanor Szares; three daughters, Anna Mae Stranz of Orchard Park, Rose Sullivan of West Seneca, and Catherine of West Seneca; three sons, William of Seminole, and Jeffrey and Peter, both of West Seneca; three sisters, Mary Nunciato of Houston, Fanny Tribuzzi of Orchard Park, and Rita Borst of Conover, N.C.; a brother, Daniel of Gowanda; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 13 in Lombardo Funeral Home, 3060 Abbott Road, Orchard Park. Inurment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
