Sandra M. DeMaria, 48, a dental hygienist and longtime resident of Amherst, died Friday in her Pinecrest, Fla., home after a battle with breast cancer. She was under the care of Catholic Hospice.
Born Sandra LaRusch in Buffalo, she was a graduate of Sweet Home High School. She earned an associate's degree in dental hygiene from Erie Community College North Campus. After graduating, she worked for private dental practices, as well as the University at Buffalo Dental School.
She left the Buffalo area in the mid-1980s after marrying Joseph A. DeMaria and moved to New York City, Miami and then Pinecrest, continuing her career in dental hygiene.
Mrs. DeMaria enjoyed cooking. She frequently returned to Buffalo to visit family members and friends.
Surviving, in addition to her husband of 23 years, are a son, Peter J. of Pinecrest, and two sisters, Cheryl A. Johnson of Holland and Michele M. Secor of Amherst.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Leo the Great Catholic Church, Amherst. Private burial was in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
