Coming attractions

St. Joe's and Canisius will meet in a nonleague boys basketball game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Niagara University, part of a charity tripleheader to benefit the Retirement Fund for the Religious.

The Ilio DiPaolo Wrestling Spotlight this week is on the Southern Tier Classic, which moves from Jamestown to Fredonia State this year. Preliminaries are Friday with finals Saturday. Also Saturday is the St. Francis Dual Meet Tournament: Clarence, Lackawanna, Canisius, Orchard Park, Pioneer, Holland, Frontier and the Red Raiders will compete at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Other action includes today's Niagara-Orleans League dual meet of Newfane at Medina. Key league dual meets Wednesday include: Jamestown at West Seneca West (ECIC I), Starpoint at Williamsville East (ECIC II) and Niagara Falls at Lew-Port (Niagara Frontier).

In hockey, rivals meet in Western New York Varsity Federation at 7 p.m. Thursday as St. Joe's and Canisius meet during a four-game lineup at the Amherst Pepsi Center.

A handful of the area's top hockey teams hit the road to major tournaments this weekend. The St. Francis prep team plays in the St. Sebastian's Tournament in Needham, Mass. St. Francis will face Thayer Academy of Braintree, Mass., at 6 p.m. Friday in the double-elimination event. Meanwhile, the Nichols boys are at the Lawrenceville (N.J.) Tournament Saturday and Sunday while the Nichols girls head to the Deerfield (Mass.) Tournament.

FOOTBALL: Matt Thomas, a 5-foot-8, 176-pound junior from Hamburg, was named to the Class A South first team at defensive back. His name was not provided to The News.
