Independent Health said it has created a new board subcommittee to give physicians more say in helping shape the insurer's health plan policies, strategies and products.
The new Health Care Policy and Strategy Committee will include nine community physicians and will be chaired by Dr. Edward Stehlik.
Stehlik said it will advise the board on health care policy and program design, and on long-term opportunities to improve health in the community. And it will identify opportunities to set best practices.
The insurer noted that formal board committees that include participating doctors are rare among U.S. health insurers.
"The input and involvement of physicians is essential if we are to bring about sustainable improvements in the quality and value of health care," said Dr. Michael Cropp, Independent Health CEO, and a physician. "As we design policies and health solutions, we want to ensure that the voices of our participating physicians are heard."
