Rev. Joseph S. Spatorico, pastor in Batavia Jan. 9, 1941 -- Sept. 26, 2005

A parish Mass for the Rev. Joseph S. Spatorico will be offered at 7 p.m. today in St. Anthony Catholic Church, 122 Liberty St., Batavia, where he was pastor since 1997.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the church at 10:30 a.m. Friday by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Niagara Falls.

Father Spatorico died Monday in Erie County Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 64.

He was a Navy chaplain from 1979 to 1997 and attained the rank of commander, serving at San Francisco, San Diego and Cherry Point, N.C. He served two tours of duty in Okinawa, Japan.

Born in Niagara Falls, Father Spatorico attended Diocesan Preparatory Seminary in Buffalo, St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester and St. John Vianney Seminary in East Aurora. He earned an MBA degree in hospital administration from Webster College in St. Louis.

Father Spatorico was ordained in 1966 by Bishop Pius A. Benincasa.

He served at Holy Family Parish in Machias, St. John Church in Jamestown, St. John de La Salle in Niagara Falls and Queen of Heaven in West Seneca before being assigned to Archbishop Walsh High School in Olean in 1975. He became temporary administrator of St. Mary Church in Bolivar in 1979.

Surviving are his mother, Carmelina C., and a brother, Salvatore B., both of Niagara Falls.
