Driver faces DWI count after SUV hits house

A North Tonawanda man was charged with driving while intoxicated early Wednesday morning after he slammed his vehicle into the front concrete steps of a Nash Road home and then into two cars in the driveway next door, police said.

The multiple crashes occurred at 2:49 a.m., after the man had eluded a brief police chase earlier in the Town of Tonawanda.

Following the crashes, the man fled from his SUV and led North Tonawanda police officers on a foot chase through back yards and over fences, North Tonawanda Police Capt. William Hall said.

Officers Robert Bohnstadt and Richard Wydysh caught the man a few blocks away from the crash site, near his home. They charged David Braun, 34, of Duane Drive, with DWI, speed not reasonable and prudent and reckless driving.

Town of Tonawanda police also cited Braun for 18 traffic summonses, following a brief chase that started when an officer spotted him going the wrong way on Sheridan Drive, North Tonawanda police said. Town police officers called off their chase after the driver turned off his lights while heading north on the Colvin Extension.
