William J. Matt, business owner Oct. 6, 1908 -- Sept, 19, 2005

Services for William Jacob Matt of Amherst, a retired chief operating engineer and former owner of a commercial and residential moving business, were held today in Bethesda World Harvest International Church, Buffalo.

Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Park, Amherst.

Mr. Matt, who was born in a house on Cherry Street in Buffalo, died Monday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. He was 96.

Before his retirement in 1975, he operated Amherst Movers in the 1950s and 1960s and worked for the Buffalo Parks Department and Board of Education.

In his younger days, Mr. Matt was a competitive cyclist. He was a member of the Amateur Bicycle League and won a New York State championship award in 1924 presented by The Buffalo Evening News. He was the winner of several bicycle competition trophies.

Survivors include two daughters, Janet Freeborn of Amherst and Elaine Wrye of Conklin; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
