ON THIS DAY -- In 1779, John Adams was named to negotiate the Revolutionary War's peace terms with Britain. . . .In 1939, Warsaw, Poland, surrendered after weeks of resistence to invading forces from Nazi Germany and the Communist Soviet Union during World War II. . . . In 1964, the Warren Commission issued a report concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald had acted alone in assassinating President John F. Kennedy. . . .

NOW WE KNOW -- Based on his observations of woolly bear caterpillars, black bears, blue winged teal ducks, wild rabbits, wild bees and monarch butterflies, Erno Rossi of Port Colborne, Ont., author of "White Death -- The Blizzard of '77" and the recently published "Crystal Beach -- The Good Old Days," has issued his annual winter weather forecast.

He expects "a mild autumn, leading into a normal winter with an early spring and the danger of ice storms in March."

Rossi, a retired history teacher, warned that a normal winter can see lots of snow, especially in lake-effect areas. "Be prepared to cuddle and shovel," he said.

Rossi, a man known for his sense of humor, told Olaf that he is fairly certain that the autumn will be mild because the black bears have given no hint of going to their dens to hibernate and the color of wooly bear caterpillars indicates a normal winter. He said he examined the paws of some road-kill rabbits and found that the hair between their toes indicated lake-effect snow accumulations. . . .

SPECIAL TRAINING -- Air Force Reserve Airman 1st Class Erika M. Fladt, a 2004 graduate of Albion High School, has graduated from the Traffic Management Apprentice Course at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio. She is the daughter of Klaus and Carmel Fladt of Albion. . . .
