Single-payer insurance OK'd for one union
The Maryvale School Board on Monday night approved moving one of its five unions onto a single-payer health insurance plan.
The board authorized the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the district's Administrative Support Association, the union representing secretarial staff. The agreement reduces the choice of HMOs from three to one. Superintendent Gary Brader said the administrators union previously agreed to a single-payer plan.
Information on savings to the district was unavailable.
"There is definitely a savings," Brader said. "We hope to eventually reach similar agreements with the rest of our unions when those contracts are open for negotiation."
