Ashley Turner's goal in the third minute was enough to give the University at Buffalo a 1-0 win over Ball State at UB Stadium on Sunday. It was the sophomore's first career goal.
Anna-Lesa Calvert had five saves in the shutout for the Bulls (3-5-1 overall, 1-1 Mid-American Conference). Ball State fell to 8-2, 1-1 in the MAC.
Elsewhere, Canisius couldn't stop Courtney Arikian in Loyola's 3-0 win at the Demske Sports Complex. Arikian had two goals within 1:55 for the Greyhounds. Jenna Gage had three saves for the Griffs (2-7, 1-2 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference). . . . Niagara received two goals from Aisha Eversley and Brittany Bisnott, outscoring Rider, 6-4, at Niagara. Amber Niece added two assists for the Purple Eagles (7-2-1, 2-1-0 MAAC). . . . Hilbert blasted Chatham, 7-0, as Katrina Galofaro (Silver Creek) had two goals and two assists.
MEN'S SOCCER: St. Francis (Pa.) handed UB its first loss of the season, 1-0. Donnie Montoya had the game's only goal. The Bulls dropped to 8-1. . . . Robert Morris' four first-half goals led to a 4-2 win over Canisius. Jason Wild and Matt Rath scored for the Golden Griffins (0-5-2).
MEN'S TENNIS: St. Bonaventure dropped three matches to Penn State in the Penn State Fall Classic in State College, Pa. At the same site, Bona won seven out of nine matches from Niagara in a "mock dual" meet. Alejandro Nery and Andrew Hart were among the singles winners for the Bonnies, while Walter Garcia was a victor for the Purple Eagles.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: UB won four of seven singles flights and two of three doubles flights at the seven-team Bowling Green Invitational. Singles winners for the Bulls were Kristen Ortman (Amherst), Katrin Fischer, Natalie Dean and Tina Jacob.
CROSS COUNTRY: The Canisius men's team finished second and the women's team was seventh in the Great American X-C Festival in Cary, N.C. Chris Castleman, a freshman, was 13th overall with a collegiate-best time of 27:04 over 8 kilometers to pace the Griffs. Alison Konecki was the Griffs' top woman, going 20:51 over 5 kilometers.
GOLF: Niagara was second, St. Bonaventure finished fifth and Canisius was 15th in the Cornell University Invitational in Ithaca. Chris Agostinelli of Niagara was fourth in the individual standings. Saint Joseph's won the tournament.
WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Erie Community College dropped a four-game match to Corning CC and a three-game match to Tompkins/Cortland. Melissa Winiarski of the Kats (0-5) had nine service aces on the day.
