Woman fights back, thwarts attempted purse snatching

A man who grabbed a woman's purse Sunday got more than he bargained for, according to South District officers.

A Barnard Street woman told officers that she was jumped from behind by a neighbor as she was walking down her street at 6:25 a.m. When she clung to her purse, he knocked her to the ground and punched her, screaming obscenities and demanding her money.

The woman said she pulled the man's sweat shirt over his head and escaped. He was last seen running north on Barnard in the direction of Clinton Street.
