Falls driver is accused of DWI, causing crash

NIAGARA FALLS -- A 23rd Street man was arrested for alleged drunken driving Saturday night after police said he ran a red light, causing a head-on crash at Niagara Street and Hyde Park Boulevard.

William P. Hald, 49, approached police arriving at the scene, contending that the other driver had been speeding, but witnesses told police that Hald ran a light while turning on the boulevard, causing the 8:06 p.m. crash.

A passenger in Hald's car, Marie Seelbaugh, 44, was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center complaining of chest injuries and possible internal injuries. Her condition was not available late Sunday.

Hald was charged with driving while intoxicated after a Breathalyzer test showed his blood-alcohol content to be 0.11, which is over the legal limit, police said. He also was charged with passing a red light.

Occupants of the other car, including driver Kelli Dowdy, 38, of Walmore Road, Sanborn, suffered minor injuries and refused treatment, according to police, who said Dowdy was not charged.
