13-year-old boy beaten unconscious by gang

A Buffalo boy spent his 13th birthday in the hospital Sunday after he was viciously beaten Friday night in a gang assault by 20 to 30 young men at Leroy and Richlawn avenues, police said.

The boy, whose identity was not released, is listed in serious but stable condition in Women and Children's Hospital.

Northeast District police said the victim was "punched, kicked and stomped" and left unconscious at about 10:50 p.m.

The case was turned over to detectives in the Homicide Squad because of the severity of the assault.

Man, 53, held in knife attack on woman

A 53-year-old Buffalo man was arrested Sunday night on charges of assault and criminal possession of a weapon in connection with a knife attack on a woman, police said.

Police charge that Peter F. Shamrock of Howell Avenue used a large kitchen knife to slash and stab the woman in her face, left arm and nose several times.

The victim, Denise D. Darneal, 49, of Main Street, suffered cuts, swelling, bruising and an extensive loss of blood, police said.

Central District police said the assault occurred at about 9:30 p.m. at Shamrock's home. Police reports said Shamrock fought with the woman, punching her in the face and body, and then attacked her with a knife. Officers Jeffrey Mott and Cindy Diem arrested Shamrock at his home and recovered a knife.

Cab driver, passenger injured in assault

A Buffalo cab driver and his fare were assaulted by a group of men at 4 a.m. Sunday morning when the taxi stopped at Niagara Street and Hertel Avenue, Northwest District police said.

Cab driver Abuka M. Munye was transported by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

His customer, David Merille, suffered a small cut on his right ear.

$98 taken in robbery, stabbing at apartment

A 29-year-old Buffalo man was robbed and stabbed early today by an unknown man visiting his Grant Street apartment, police said.

Martin Odell suffered two superficial stab wounds -- one on his left temple, the other on the left side of his neck.

Northwest District police said the assailant attacked Odell in his lower apartment in the 300 block of Grant at about 12:55 a.m. The robber then stole $98 and drove away in a gray van north on Grant.

Youth hospitalized in Rodney Ave. shooting

A 16-year-old Buffalo youth was shot in his left leg Saturday morning on Rodney Avenue, police said.

Adonis Linder of Marigold Avenue was listed in good condition Sunday in Erie County Medical Center, where he was taken by ambulance.

Northeast District police said the bullet was fired at about 12:05 a.m. from the rear of a house on the 200 block of Rodney.

Woman fights back, thwarts attempted purse snatching

A man who grabbed a woman's purse Sunday got more than he bargained for, according to South District officers.

A Barnard Street woman told officers that she was jumped from behind by a neighbor as she was walking down her street at 6:25 a.m. When she clung to her purse, he knocked her to the ground and punched her, screaming obscenities and demanding her money.

The woman said she pulled the man's sweat shirt over his head and escaped.

Man says his girlfriend stabbed him five times

Buffalo police are looking for a woman who they believe stabbed her boyfriend five times after finding him in her apartment with another woman.

James Kenner, 23, of Rounds Avenue, told Central District officers Sunday while awaiting surgery in Erie County Medical Center that he was stabbed by his 22-year-old girlfriend in her apartment on Jefferson Avenue.

Kenner told police that his girlfriend pulled a large knife from her purse and stabbed him in the chest, leg and elbow.

Lt. Gail Allen of the Ferry-Fillmore District said she checked the woman's apartment and found traces of blood. Police said they intend to charge the suspect with possession of a weapon and attempted murder.

Stolen car recovered in city, suspect arrested

South District officers Sunday recovered a stolen 1995 Chrysler on Lombard Street and arrested a suspect.

The car had been taken from Smith and Fulton streets Saturday evening. Police said they found the car with its speakers missing and arrested Robert L. Smith, 43, of Fillmore Avenue, on charges of grand larceny, possession of stolen property and possession of a crack pipe.
