Cause sought for fire in car carrier on I-86
RANDOLPH -- Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies were trying to determine what caused a car carrier and six cars to erupt into flames Friday on Interstate 86.
Deputies said Timothy P. Stachowicz of Port Byron, the driver, told them he heard a loud noise, pulled off the road and found a rear tire and the carrier in flames.
Stachowicz was able to detach his truck from the trailer and save six cars he had been hauling. But the car carrier and six Subaru vehicles were destroyed, deputies said. No charges were filed against the driver.
