Sophie Kociencki of Sloan, who worked as a bookkeeper in the food management industry, died Thursday in St. Francis Nursing Home. She was 90.
Born Sophie Fuglewicz in Lancaster to Polish immigrants, she was the third of nine children.
While in her early teens, she began working outside the home to help with family finances. During World War II, she worked as an inspector for Chevrolet.
Mrs. Kociencki later worked more than 20 years as a bookkeeper at Food Town, Super Duper and Bells IGA.
A devoted Catholic, she was a parishioner at St. John Kanty Catholic Church in Buffalo.
Her husband, Thaddeus J., died in 1981.
Survivors include a son, Thaddeus of Newstead; a sister, Rose Marchinda of Depew; two granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. John Kanty Church, Broadway and Swinburne Street. Prayers will be said at 9 in Smolarek Funeral Home, 2047 Broadway. Burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Lancaster.
