Benefit set for Katrina victims in area

A night of music to benefit the evacuees of Hurricane Katrina who are being cared for in the Buffalo area will be held Oct. 7 in the Buffalo Irish Center.

Several bands are scheduled to perform at the event, from 6 p.m. to midnight in the Emerald Room at the center, 245 Abbott Road, Buffalo.

A $5 donation is requested at the door. The event will include a raffle and cash bar.

Proceeds will go to the local American Red Cross chapter.

More than 550 evacuees of Hurricane Katrina have been assisted by the Greater Buffalo Chapter of the American Red Cross, the agency announced.

The local chapter also has raised almost $2 million for disaster relief and deployed four volunteers, with more on standby.

Stephen Kane, president of three Western New York Ashley HomeStores, announced that the local Ashley stores have donated $5,000 to help relief efforts caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Additionally, the Arcadia, Wis.-based chain donated $5,000 to Catholic Charities to assist victims of the storm that devastated New Orleans and other localities.
