ECIDA to seek funding for Spaulding Fibre site
The Tonawanda Common Council agreed Tuesday to allow the Erie County Industrial Development Agency to handle raising funds to remediate and redevelop the abandoned Spaulding Fibre factory.
The Spaulding Fibre site, which has been closed for nearly 20 years, has been involved in various court litigation since the mid-1990s, when the company declared bankruptcy.
In recent years, the City of Tonawanda settled the legal matters regarding the site and assumed ownership but lacks the funding necessary to clean the property.
With the state requiring the city to designate a single entity to raise and manage the funding used to clean the Spaulding site, the Council's action Tuesday authorized the IDA to act as lead agency on the matter. The agency will be responsible for seeking revenue from sources such as the federal Superfund grants.
