In 1958, civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was stabbed in the chest at a New York City department store by an apparently deranged woman. . . . In 1995, in a move that stunned Wall Street, AT&T Corp. announced it was splitting into three companies. . . .

ROCK OF AGES -- The first "Stone Soup" supper of the season will be served at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Broad Street School Hall of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 150 Broad St., City of Tonawanda.

The Stone Soup name comes from European folk tales in which village peasants added vegetables and meats to an iron cauldron containing water and a "tasty" stone. The pot soon contained a feast for everyone to enjoy. Or something like that.

ALUMNI of Millard Fillmore Hospitals will hold a reunion Oct. 14 and 15 for all former residents and fellows who have gone through the Millard Fillmore program over the years. Events will include a Friday night cocktail reception, a Saturday afternoon golf outing and a Saturday night dinner and dance. For information, call 887-4808. . . .

A RUMMAGE SALE will be held by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Town Line Volunteer Fire Department from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the fire hall, 6507 Broadway, Lancaster, according to a reminder from Sally Herzog, Auxiliary president. She said refreshments will be available. . . .

SPAGHETTI DINNERS will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist Church, 711 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst. Nancy L. Hutnyan, office manager, said adults will be asked to donate $6 and a donation of $3 will be asked for children 7 to 10. Eaters 6 and younger don't have to pay. . . .

A STEAK ROAST will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at West Seneca Post 8113, Veterans of Foreign Wars, at 299 Leydecker Road. The charcoal, one-pound steaks with salad, potato, rolls and coffee will cost $13 per person. Tickets will be available at the door. . . .

COMPLETES BASIC TRAINING -- Army Reserve Pvt. James D. Currey, son of Jim and Joanne Currey of West Seneca, has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. He is a 2004 graduate of Orchard Park High School. . . .
