A BENEFIT for 11-year-old Rebecca Howe, of West Valley, who has been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver, will be held Oct. 1 at the West Valley Fire Hall, Route 219. Barbecue chicken meals ($7 presale and $7.50 at the door) will be served from noon until the chickens are sold out. A bake sale and silent auction will begin at 10 a.m.

Rebecca will need a liver transplant. She and her family will have to travel outside Western New York to receive medical care and the organ transplant. For information or to make a donation, call 942-6003. . . .

A USED-BOOK SALE will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Fridayand 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday by the Friends of the Elma Library in the Elma Senior Center, 3007 Bowen Road, according to a note from Martha Heussler. She said admission will be free except for a $5 presale charge at 9 a.m. Friday for people who want to get a first look at the books for an hour. . . .

A FESTIVAL highlighting the cultural and ethnic diversity of St. Joseph University Catholic Church will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday under tents on the parish grounds at 3269 Main St., adjoining the University at Buffalo South Campus.

The event, called "Taste of St. Joseph," will be held rain or shine. All activities are free and open to the public. Joanne Messer said visitors will be invited to sample the food, dance, hear music and enjoy crafts and culture of many countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central America, South America and the United States. The parish was established in 1850 and has 1,600 registered families as well as 350 UB students. For information, call 833-0298. . . .

PASTA DINNERS will be served from noon to 5 p.m. Sundayby Niagara-Orleans District, Order of the Eastern Star, in Lockport Masonic Hall, Main and Cottage streets.

Donations of $5 per eater will be collected. The "all you can eat" meal will include a salad, Italian bread and butter, dessert and beverage. All proceeds go to charity. . . .

COMPLETES BASIC -- Airman Ryan D. Howard, a 2002 graduate of Pioneer High School in Yorkshire, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of Donald and Kathryn Howard of Arcade. . . .
