A man and woman were arrested after a high-speed crash into a bridge abutment early Sunday while trying to elude police in a stolen car.
Police said they interrupted them while they were trying to break into a car in the parking lot of the Hampton Inn on Buffalo Avenue at about 4 a.m. They then led officers on a chase along city streets that reached 50 mph and forced two cars off the roadway, Officers Todd Faddoul and Ronald Cirrito said.
Two state troopers picked up the chase when they were nearly hit head-on, with speeds climbing in excess of 100 mph as the chase continued along Buffalo Avenue into the city's LaSalle section.
It ended abruptly at Cayuga Drive and South Military Road when the suspects' vehicle missed a curve and slammed into the bridge abutment. The female passenger was injured, but the male driver hopped over the hood of the car and fled into nearby Cayuga Creek as police arrived on the scene.
He was found an hour later, hiding beneath a bridge and suffering from possible hypothermia. Both suspects were taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center for treatment.
Police charged Andre J. Miljour Jr., 43, of Dawn Drive, with two counts of criminal possession of stolen property, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an injury accident and nine traffic counts.
The passenger, identified as Tracy L. Gordon, 35, of the Town of Tonawanda, faces the stolen property and unauthorized use charges, as well as a felony count of third-degree criminal mischief.
