Carol G. Hastrich, a professional artist and longtime Grand Island resident, died Friday in Marliere Care Center, a hospice, in New Port Richey, Fla., after a long illness. She was 73.
Born Carol G. Strachan in Buffalo, she moved to Grand Island in the early 1960s and moved to Hudson, Fla., about 20 years ago.
After earning her high school general education diploma, she obtained a bachelor's degree in art in 1970 from Buffalo State College. She also attended Niagara County Community College.
A professional artist, Mrs. Hastrich painted murals in churches in Western New York and Florida, including St. Teresa Catholic Church in Spring Hill, Fla. Her work -- including portraits and abstracts -- were exhibited widely.
She also taught art at public schools in the Buffalo area and Florida.
As a Grand island resident, she was active in amateur theater and also made costumes for the Ice Capades during appearances by the troupe in Buffalo.
An auxiliary member of the American Legion, she was a Eucharistic minister at St. Teresa Church in Spring Hill.
Survivors include two sons, Duane E. of New Port Richey and Richard J. of Spring Hill, Tenn.; a daughter, Dea M. Albertson of La Porte, Texas; two sisters, Joan Woelfel of Irving and Joyce Strachan of Lancaster; a brother, John A. Strachan of Richmond, Calif.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Teresa Church, Spring Hill. Burial was in Grace Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Hudson.
