New class, teacher OK'd as needs shift

Enrollment in Cheektowaga Central Schools this week is the same as it was this time last year, but the district is adding a new class at Pine Hill Elementary.

Total enrollment is 2,371, School Superintendent Delia G. Bonenberger said, but the configuration of students per grade is different.

"First grade has particularly gotten large," she said.

In mid-August, 155 pupils had enrolled at Pine Hill.

"Now it's at 178," she said.

The School Board on Tuesday night approved the creation of a new classroom and is expected to hire a new teacher during its Sept. 27 meeting.

"We're posting for an additional teacher, which is not what we want to do after school starts," Bonenberger said.

She said the parents of new pupils were told when they registered that they may have to change classes if the sizes get too large. She said that there are about 22 pupils per kindergarten class and 23 in first-grade classes.

"We like to keep them at 20 or under," she said.

Bonenberger said the new classroom might be multi-age, with both kindergarten and first-grade pupils. It should be created next week, she said, and would be staffed with a substitute teacher until a full-time teacher could be hired.

The board also hired part-time clerk Mary Ann Miano to be district clerk, effective Nov. 1. Longtime board clerk Linda Koteras is stepping down at that time.
