Candidate for Town Board faults Giambra tax plan
Erie County Executive Joel A. Giambra's proposed two-year increase of about 50 percent in the property tax amounts to a "double tax" for taxpayers in areas with skyrocketing assessments, according to Guy Marlette, a Republican candidate for Amherst Town Board.
Marlette called on the Town Board to help head off what he calls "double dipping" by county officials. According to town records, Amherst added nearly $500 million to its tax base this year because of reassessments, Marlette said.
Instead of using the 2005 assessment roll to compute taxes in Amherst and other communities that conduct frequent reassessments, Marlette wants the county to base its taxes on the 2004 roll, which would reduce the amount to be collected in those areas.
Amherst Council Member William L. Kindel said he, too, will ask the board to request that county tax officials use the same tax base they used to compute this year's taxes.
